Department of Teacher Education


Educational institutions like that of  ours- Ambo university -  has deemed to respond to such a need, as it would be hard to realize the national educational goals, without the timely and genuine commitment of higher education institutions. As the result, teacher education in Ambo University has a long range and short term plan to producing knowledgeable, skilled and attitudinally mature graduates both in quantity and quality that would serve the country in different professionals; Laying down a problem-solving educational and institutional system that would able to utilize potential resources; and Providing social services which are compatible with the needs and development of the country.

Teacher education as a department was established during the year 2003 with a  vision of Producing  a competent and skillful teachers and supervisors who could enhance the implementation of active learning method,  reflective practice and continuous assessment. As the result its main objective is to producescurriculum experts, supervisors, and teachers   who could render consultancy services and conduct research  for the government and nongovernmental organizations.

    Based on the above reality, the department is currently working up to its maximum effort toProduce knowledgeable, skilled and attitudinally mature graduates both in quantity and quality that would serve the country in different professionals. To this end, the  department has been started accepting students to be trained as a PGDT  program since 2007 and 2008 as a summer and regular program respectively, and tried to equip them with various pedagogical, psychological courses. Furthermore, department has been accepted and made the students graduated as  PGDT program since 2007.

    In addition to  all of the above facts  in order to enhance  educational responsiveness to the dynamic demands of the society, the department  of teacher education  in Ambo  University has  launched the department of Curriculum and Instruction starting from 20011 at MA level with the intention to produce competent curriculum specialists who can contribute for the success of the education system and the development of the country.

     Vision and  Mission of the Department


    The vision of the department will be an input for the vision of the university which read as: “Ambo University aspires to be one of the leading national universities and to be recognized internationally in providing quality education; and problem solving research and rendering need driven community services.”  Thus, the department of teacher education  has a vision that it will become a center of excellence in producing a curriculum specialists and capable teacher educators by 2020. 


    •   Producing competent and effective curriculum experts who help in the curriculum development, implementation and evaluation at all educational levels;
    • Produce a competent and skillful supervisors and teachers who could enhance implementation of the active learning method and continuous assessment methods ;and
    •  Produce curriculum experts, supervisors, and teachers   who could render consultancy services and conduct research   for the government and nongovernmental organizations.

     Academics –Post Graduate in Curriculum and Instruction


    Most individuals who are assigned to teach curriculum courses in TTC’S and Universities  and work on curriculum related issues at different positions lack the professional knowledge expected of them. As the result, since one of the missions of Ambo University is to produce competent graduates who can effectively teach and accomplish their assigned jobs, teacher education department has sensed the need for launching a post graduate program in curriculum and instruction to fill the reported gap.


     General Objectives

    The M.A program in Curriculum and Teachers’ Professional Development is intended to meet the following general objectives:

    • To produce competent curriculum specialists who are able to effectively plan, develop, implement and evaluate curriculum and teachers development programs at all levels of education.

      Specific Objectives

    Up on the completion of the program the graduate will be able to:

    • Identify the philosophical, social and psychological foundations of education.
    • Understands about curriculum development and evaluation.
    • Appreciate the role of instructional material in teaching- learning process
    • Teach pedagogical courses at public and private educational institution.
    •  Develop, implement and evaluate educational programs.
    • Apply technological products to enhance education,
    •   Manage educational changes and developments,
    •  Render consultancy services for government and nongovernment organizations that meet the requirements of the education system.

    Program Requirement

      Admission Requirements 

    The following are application requirements:

    Admission will be based on the regulations of harmonized academic policy of Ethiopian public higher institutions. To this effect, the applicants for the M.A program in Curriculum and instruction are expected to:

    • Have a  Bachelor’s Degree in any field from recognized higher institution
    • Have a  Cumulative Grade Point Average  /CGPA/ of 2.00 and above in the undergraduate program
    • Have taken at least one professional course(s)
    • Pass the entrance examination administered as part of the screening process.
    • Produce a minimum of two letters of recommendation from undergraduate instructors, employers or professional Associates.
    • Submit the acceptable official transcript from the college or university where they obtained their first degree

     Duration of study

    The duration for the program shall normally take two-year full time regular study. When this program is offered through extension, summer and distance combination, it will take two and half years to three years. The program will be delivered in three modes:


    The program of study shall normally take two academic years; two Begas (each Bega from September to June). Each Bega is divided in to two semesters for regular.


    The second mode of delivery of the program is summer/Kiremt face to face and distance program supported with learning modules and intensive tutorials by the course instructors at selected tutorial centers at least twice in a semester. Similarly, this program of study shall normally take two academic years (which encompasses two Begas and two kiremts).In the two Kiremts five courses will be offered each. The remaining courses are to be offered during Begas.

    The first Bega is divided in to two semesters called distance I and distance II and in these two semesters five courses will be offered in distance mode. The second Bega is again divided in to two semesters called distance III & distance IV. During distance III the students are expected to take Seminar in Curriculum, and thesis. In distance IV the students will take thesis.


    For extension (evening) mode Bega courses will be offered in face to face, outside of the regular program. If the students fail to complete the program within this time frame, for accepted reasons by the Faculty Graduate Committee, the student may be allowed to continue for one additional year.


    The graduation requirements for this program include:

    • Earn a total of 36 credit hours (30 credit hours in the course work including thesis 6 credit hours in the thesis work).
    • Pass in all courses and obtain a minimum of CGPA 3.00 for the course work. Not more than one C and / C+ in the course work.
    • Complete and successfully defend thesis work.


    The type of Master of Degree conferred shall be Master of Arts (M.A) in Curriculum and Instruction(የ›`ƒ ማስተርዲግሪበስር¯ተትምህርትና በማሰተማር ሰነ-ዘÈ)


    Upon the successfully completion of the program, the program tends to produce graduates who are competent to:

    • Plan and develop primary, secondary and tertiary education curriculum.
    • Provide consultancy services for federal, regional and local educational institutions in resolving problems of educational systems.
    • Monitor and evaluate school professional development practices and develop intervention strategies.
    • Serve as a curriculum advisor in curriculum designing, implementation and evaluation,
    • Conduct educational researches with desired quality in various educational issues.
    •  Assess educational needs at national and local level to introduce new educational programs and review the existing ones.
    • Teach pedagogical courses in colleges of teachers’ education.
    • Use instructional media and technology in education to enhance student learning
