The Department of veterinary science is one of the new departments established within few years back. The department is producing animal health professionals with BSc degree and the graduates are being recruited in different institution starting from district level to the regional and Federal institutions.

In Ambo University the department of veterinary science was established in 2016 under the department of veterinary Laboratory Technology. After 2 years of establishment the department become independent 2018.

Within few months the department also started to expand its first degree programs as Continuing Education Program(CEP) in addition to the Regular Program. At this time the department is running two graduate program (MSc in veterinary Epidemiology and MSc in Veterinary Public Health).

Regarding community service and research there are two mega projects and two community service on bracken fern poisoning of ruminants and Rabies vaccine in West Shewa and South East Shewa zone. The department is also establishing Veterinary Clinic which will start to serve the community by treating and prevention animal disease with fair payment.

Also the department has the plan to become one of the best department in Ambo University as well as in Africa in producing quality graduates in the field of veterinary science, doing problem solving research with the collaboration of international and local institution and improving the lively hood of the community by performing profession responsibility. 

Generally, the department of veterinary science is one of the fast growing department in the Ambo University with learning and teaching activity, serving community and doing research activity when compared with its year of establishment.
