About Social Work Department
The Social Work program is built upon an interdisciplinary foundation of knowledge drawn from related social science and
humanities disciplines such as psychology, sociology, anthropology, history, medicine, philosophy and ethics, economics, personnel
management and public administration, social policy, and law. The program is designed with the understanding that developing the
knowledge and skills required for competent practice with individuals and families necessitates extensive coursework.
At first, Social Work at Ambo was not a standalone department; it was part of a joint department combining Sociology and Social
Work. This combined “Sociology and Social Work” department was originally established under CSSH (College of Social Science
and Humanities). Currently, the department offers both Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programs in the regular modality. The
Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) program began in 2016, while the Master of Social Work (MSW) program was established in 2021
GC. The department currently has seven active academic staff members: two PhD holders, one Assistant Professor, and four
Lecturers, all of whom have more than ten years of experience
